1. Tread Direction: The Arrow Rule

Directional Tread Tires:
Many industrial tires feature a directional tread pattern, easily identified by a V-shaped or arrow-like design. The correct orientation is simple:

The arrow should always point forward in the direction of travel.

  • Why is this important?
    Forward-pointing tread ensures maximum traction, efficient self-cleaning, and even tread wear. Installing a directional tire backwards can reduce grip and accelerate wear, especially in wet or loose conditions. It will also affect operator ride and comfort.

Non-Directional Tread Tires:
Some tires have a symmetrical, non-directional tread. These can be installed on either side of the machine, but other factors (like lock ring placement) still apply.

What is a lock ring?
The lock ring is a rounded lip located between the tire and the wheel, designed to secure the tire in place. It is a critical safety component, especially for solid tires.

Proper Placement:

  • The lock ring should always face inwards, towards the machine.
  • This positioning protects the lock ring from accidental impacts and collisions during operation, which can otherwise lead to costly damage or even wheel failure.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Ignore Labels if Uncertain:
    While some wheels are labeled “left” or “right,” these labels can peel off or become illegible over time, especially on refurbished wheels. Always verify using the steps below.
  2. Check the Tread Pattern:
    • For directional tread, ensure the arrow points forward.
    • For non-directional tread, move to the next step.
  3. Inspect the Lock Ring:
    • Identify the lock ring’s open slit or rounded edge.
